Introduction provided by Prof. Vangie Blust for Food, Society, and Environment at Green Mountain College

Food, Society and Environment focuses on why we eat what we eat, why we get to eat when some don't, and the trends and technologies that characterize our food supply. Important questions include: What kinds of forces govern food selection, processing, marketing, and consumption and the diversity in human food habits? And what is the influence of the food industry on nutrition on health?

An objective of the course is to examine some factors that determine our food choices and preferences. Those factors are biological, sensory, developmental, social, cultural, emotional, and cognitive.

Introduction provided by Prof. Robert Allen for his English Language class at Hannam University.

This class will be the first in what is hoped to be a long-term internet relationship with students from Green Mountain College in Vermont. It is hoped that the relationship will prove to be beneficial to students from both colleges as a means of exchanging cultural information. At the beginning of the term, students will participate in groups and individually to establish relationships with students from GMC. Throughout the term, some of the writing and conversation assignments will be rlevant to subjects that will be part of the GMC/Hannam curriculum providing an excellent opportunity to communicate with American students. Please feel free to share any ideas that you may have for inter-class activities. In addition, if you have any particular questions or tipics you think would be beneficial to present to GMC students, please contact me as soon as possible or post them in the discussion forum.

For the Green Mountain College portion of the course students from Hannam will: 1) E-mail self-descriptions to GMC (do not include name; GMC students will try to guess who you are); 2) Explore asking and answering questions in English; 3) Write a group introduction using comparing and contrasting transition goals; 4) E-mail GMC students; 5) Brainstorm answers to GMC food questions; 6) Write answers to food questions; and 7) Write an essay addressing memories of food and family to send to GMC students.

Discussion questions:
1. The American fast food industry has become hugely popular across the globe. McDonald's, for example, with 12, 804 restaurants in the United States, has 243 in South Korea. However, despite McDonald's visibility and success in many countries, their presence has occasionally met some resistance. 1. What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of McDonald's to South Korea as a host country, in general, and to the Koreans as consumers, in particular? 2.What do you think are Mcdonald's' influences on South Korea's traditional cuisine? 3. In your opinion, what is the future of McDonald's in a country like South Korea?
